Update Because It has Been a While

Hey, everybody! Happy Sunday!! I know I haven’t posted much. I’ve been busy and . . . well . . . going through a blog rut. But I did warn you I wasn’t going to post that often this year, which is turning out to be true . . . somewhat sadly. So, since it’s been a few weeks, I thought I’d give you an update on what’s been happening!

I Finished the First Draft of Book 2!

That’s right, this series as a sequel and it’s pretty, grammatically ugly, and has many issues, but it’s written and I am happy. I started the draft, as you know, at the start of NaNo 2017, and finished it February 8. The draft stands at 92,195 words and I am hoping with the coming edits and revision that number will grow. It needs a lot of help, as first drafts always do.

I wrote up a synopsis for book 2 that helped me make it to the end, but even though I planned out the scenes, that still didn’t stop certain characters from going off the radar and doing their own thing. I was surprised by three things that I did not know would happen. I really, really, really, really want to tell you what they are but spoilers. I’ll just say that the last one that happened made me really happy and it was about time for a certain thing to play out between a couple of my characters. Again, spoilers πŸ˜‰

I Got My Beta’s Comments/Suggestions Back!

A little later than I had hoped but that was good because while I waited, I finsihed book 2! Now, I can put book 2 to the side and focus once again on book 1.

I am 1/3 of the way through. I ended up combining all of the documents that had comments and corrections. The combined document kind of freaked out. Like there are pages and pages of crossed out lines, red squiggly lines, but that was just Word being buggy. I have to say, I would not suggest editing this way unless you had more than 5 people who looked at the draft. It does save time rather than going through each one and carving out the comments. But the buggy-ness is a bit overwhelming.

With so many comments and suggestions, I can only handle small doses of editing. If I edit too much, I get to a point where I want to burn my computer. The story sucks, the characters suck, everything sucks . . . Which happened Friday night, so no editing for me this weekend.

The Heir, the Prince, and the Traitor‘s Schedule!

So, if you don’t know, I really want to get this baby self-published this year, specifically this summer. My CP has been a great help to me. She’s pointed out an issue that no has yet. My main character Alaine has some motivational problems that need to be expanded upon. After I’m done fixing up the issues with this draft, I will contact a couple of editors who I believe will help me to improve it even more.

After that, I am hoping I will have a final draft I can send to yet another round of betas. I wasn’t planning on having a few look at it in its final draft, maybe one or two, but a few Twitter writing friends and a couple of betas wanted to read it again and see how the changes worked out.

I’ll start working with the cover designer I have picked out. I love his work and I think he could do an amazing job. More details on the cover will come once the cover is created and complete. I will of course do a cover reveal on here, Twitter, and Instagram, and that may be happening sometime in May or June, so stay tuned. Maybe if everything works out before my birthday in May, I’ll reveal the cover on my birthday. We’ll see. I’m super excited!

Once the betas have read the final draft, I’ll make the last minute changes, I’ll work with another writing friend on the interior formatting, and begin the Createspace process.

I always feel like I’m missing something, and I know I am. This is just a rough summary of what I hope is to come. But you might be asking yourself, “When will the first book be released?” Right now I don’t have a set date. But it will happen in the summer.

I’m not really looking forward to the marketing bit of it all. I’m probably going to be horrible at it but I know it’s a learning process. If you have self-published and have any marketing tips, please share them with me!

I think that’s mostly it for book 1. The end it drawing near and I serious can’t believe it. The map is officially complete and I will post the latest version of it soon.

Personal Life Update

I am less than a month away from being done with Community College and completing my Associate of Arts and Science degree as well as a Digital Design certificate!

But school isn’t over and I have two final projects that are not complete and one is still in the beginning process. The other is almost finished and if you are curious as to what I am doing for my Digital Design final, I will post pictures of it on my page on Deviant Art. You can also check out some of my art, though I’m not going to push you to because then I would be linking my art life and writing life together and that is something I don’t want to do. I like them to be separate. But if you’re curious about my art life, then go ahead and check out the link. The only thing art related I have on this blog will be character drawings and maps.

If you’re one of those people who often ask people in my generation “So, what are you going to do next? 4-year college? Work?” Then I have an answer for you. I am in the process of applying to an Adventist college program that is also a study abroad program. So, if everything goes well, I will be spending the next 9-ish months in another country (TBA) starting in September. Honestly, that terrifies me more than the publishing/marketing bit. Going to a country where I don’t speak the language, high chance of me traveling alone . . .

Sometimes I try to talk myself out of it, but I know I probably won’t get a chance like this again, so . . . I’ll just push back the fear.

I have no idea what my life will be like when I’m there but I am just praying I’ll have time to focus on writing and marketing.

“But after? Where will you be heading to and what will you be doing?” Well, since you asked, the plan is I will apply to a trade school in Seattle – a 2-year program for Game Art and Animation.

“And after that?” I DON’T KNOW! I can only think one or two years ahead. Don’t ask me . . . Trying to take it one year at a time and this one is really building up to be busy.

Let’s see, anything else? I think those are mostly the two big things happening with me. There are few minor things but I don’t want to bore you.

I think that completes all the updates that have happened in the past month. I want to hear from you now! What’s been happening? How’s life going for you? How’s the writing coming?

  1. Congrats on finishing the first drsft of the second book! And things done like they’re really getting exciting for you now. I’ve only just started down the road of editing hell for my first draft with only my eyes on it so I can imagine how overwhelming all that feedback all at once must be!

      Thank you! It is exciting:)
Good luck with the editing. Not exactly my favorite part of the writing process but it’s gotta be done. And yes, it does get overwhelming most days, but I just have to keep reminding myself that this will help my story grow into a beautiful book someday.

Thank you! πŸ˜€ I totally understand! I get months like that too and I just feel bad for not writing in my WIP… I hope you get some writing time in and finish your project!
Thank you, it was really fun to draw them:)
