Beautiful People ~ The Author’s Writing Process Edition

*pops head out of hobbit hole*

Hi! Yeah, I know I said I wouldn’t be able to post anything during July, but this is Cait and Sky‘s Beautiful People! How could I not emerge back into the blog world to participant and miss this glorious opportunity to talk about myself?

For those who don’t know, Beautiful People is a blog meme where Cait and Sky post questions for your characters, WIP, books, and you! And all you gotta do is take the questions and answer them on your blog!

So, let’s get right to it! Because well, I’m procrastinating from doing my homework . . . haha . . . anyway . . .

How do you decide which project to work on?

Typically it’s the one I’m passionate about. The current one I’m working on has been with me for years, and I’ve come too far to stop and switch to something else.

How long does it usually take you to finish a project?

Ha! Depends on a lot of things. The first draft took me 6 months? I believe? Revisions take me less than that, but to completely finish my novel to where it’s ready to go out into the world? No idea. Long time:)

Do you have any routines to put you in the writing mood?

Typically I put on a playlist I made of all these soundtrack scores from movies I love. I make sure I have nothing else that needs to be done, turn on the Christmas lights in my room, all my lamps, like up my scented candles, and then hopefully I can focus and not get distracted by anything.

What time of day do you write best?

Morning, typically. Sometimes I can write at night, but it’s hard in the middle of the day.

Are there any authors you think you have a similar style to?

I believe every writer has their own style of writing, their own voice, and their own special way of telling a story. I’ve never really thought about comparing myself to someone else, and I don’t really want to.

Why did you start writing, and why do you keep writing?

I wanted to start writing because I wanted to create my own world, my own characters, and take them on adventures. My characters keep me going. They’re the ones who morph the story, I’m just there for the ride.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve written?

Currently my WIP. It’s going to be a series, so planning out the first book, then the rest of the series, then deciding on how much of the world-building I want to put in it, having to cut characters, etc. It’s harder than I thought, to be honest, but I guess I’m just so stubborn that I won’t give it up. And my characters are too precious for me to store away in a folder and forget about them.

Is there a project you want to tackle someday but you don’t feel ready yet?

I’d like to write in a different genre, currently I’m writing fantasy, so after this series is done, it’ll be interesting switching to a new genre. I have this mystery/thriller idea that came to me, but I don’t believe I’m ready for it just yet.

What writing goals did you make for 2017 and how are they going?

To finish one of my revisions (but started another), save up for an editor (haven’t started yet), start book 2 of my series (check), and decide whether to self-pub or go the traditional route (still haven’t decided).

Describe your writing process in 3 words or a gif!

Basically, just me complaining 80% of the time.

There you have it! Another wonderful Beautiful People Edition this month:) Can’t wait for next month! Anyway, I shall retire back into my hole and continue to suffer through summer school.

Short Camp NaNo update? Well, since you asked! It’s not going as well as I had hoped. I’ve written 6 pages in total (goal is 150), and I haven’t had time to write these past few days, but I will charge on and not give up! I will write until my fingers fall off, until I can no longer blink because I’ve been staring at the screen too long. I will write all day and all night (probably not)! But the most important thing is, I WILL TRY! And for those participating in Camp . . .

Have a happy summer, everybody! And I shall return close to the fall 😀

  1. Hi! I love your answers. I completely agree about developing your own style of writing and not comparing to anyone else. As writers, we gotta write from our heart 🙂
I am doing Camp Nano as well, currently around 8000 words in (out of 50000). Also feeling that it’s hard to find time to write 😦

    1. Hope

Yay, I’m not alone! At least you’ve written, so that counts. It’s better than not having written anything at all. Just keep going! You can do it! A little bit each day is better than nothing:)
