Beautiful People: Couple Edition

So, yesterday I was wondering what I was going to post this snowy, Sunday, Super Bowl morning and just couldn’t decide. And then when I opened my email this morning, I received an email from Papery Fury for the next Beautiful People blog meme from Cait and Sky, and I thought, “Sweet!” This mouth’s theme is Character Couples. This will be interesting since the first book mostly is about my couple Alaine and Michael becoming friends (not the main story, btw). So, let’s dive in!

  1. How and why did they meet?

My characters Alaine and Michael from The Coran Chronicles meet in a non-tradition way. Michael is alone, enjoying a swim in Lake Stellar when a girl drops out of the sky and falls into the lake. He’s a bit startled, understandably, and when he notices that she hasn’t come up, he dives into the lake and rescues her. As for why Alaine fell into that specific lake, she had just teleported from Earth to Coran and . . . it was a bit of an accident and also lucky she didn’t fall onto the hard ground.

  2. What were their first impressions of each other?

Well . . . Michael, who’s sort of been raised from birth to hate anyone with magic, is unsure of what to think. This is the first time he has ever encountered someone with magic by himself, so after dragging Alaine to shore, he finds his dagger and points it at her. And Alaine thinks the dagger is a bit ‘pointless’ (sorry) because since she has magic (magic she has never even used – except for the teleporting) she could easily disarm him. So, she thinks he a being a little bit over dramatic, but she’s one to talk when she’s sort of freaking out about being on another world.

  3. How would they prove their love for each other?

Michael proves his love by always believing in her and supporting her, even when Alaine doesn’t believe in herself, and he’s always there to pick her up when she falls and can’t pick herself up. Alaine, on the other hand, proves her love by actually telling him she loves him, which isn’t easy for her because falling in love with someone wasn’t on her life agenda.

  4. What would be an ideal date?

Sword fighting and then a light picnic afterwards or riding out in the fields on their steeds.

  5. Is there something they emphatically disagree on?

How one should treat a servant or maid/manservant.

  6. List 5 “food quirks” they know about each other. (Ex: how they take their coffee, if they’re allergic to something, etc….and feel free to mention other non-food quirks!)

1: Michael loves waffles and Alaine makes sure that her mom or dad or even herself make them for him whenever he visits her on Earth. 2: Michael knows never to eat snacks in front of Alaine because she can’t eat (long story – her orb which is supplying her magical powers won’t let her consume food). 3: When Alaine can eat (long story) Michael knows she loves dried yelms, which are a fruit that’s the size of an apple but have the texture of a plum. They are quite sour, but when dried, the fruit can be very sweet. 4: Alaine will sometimes teleport into the kitchen late at night and snag a couple of berry pastries for Michael when he can’t sleep because of unwanted nightmares. 5: Michael doesn’t like pizza – too greasy for him.

  7. What’s one thing they know about each other that no one else does?

Alaine is the only one who knows Michael’s fear of dragons and wyrms. Michael is the only one who knows how Alaine truly feels about her biological mother, who she’s never met and never will meet.

  8. What’s one thing that they keep a secret from each other?

Michael secretly likes her pet hornet (which is a unicorn basically), even though he says he hates the creature. Alaine never tells Michael she has a pet dragon – never – because he’s terrified of dragons.

  9. How would their lives be different without each other?

Michael talks with his mother about life and important things but on subjects such as his father, mages, and things he’s afraid of or becoming, Alaine has been the only one he can truly confide in. If she wasn’t in the picture, he would be keeping a lot of pain hidden away. Alaine would never know what it’s like to truly love someone. I mean, if she never met Michael, she might end up with her best friend Matthew, but she’s never really loved Matthew – only in the best friend kind of way.

  10. Where do they each see this relationship going?

Their relationship is a bit complicated. Michael’s parents, once they find out, absolutely forbid Michael of ever seeing Alaine because she’s a mage and they hate mages and her (for a very specific reason). As for Alaine’s parents, they don’t really want her living the rest of her life on Coran because Earth is really her home (even though she was born on Coran) and they would feel as though they were losing her forever. So, they take it one day at a time. Plus, Alaine is expected to be the new high queen, and Michael’s parents are finding him a bride to marry and he’ll soon take up the crown in his kingdom. So, yeah, it’s a bit complicated.

Honesty, this was a great list of questions! Alaine and Michael don’t really start “liking” each other until the second book, even then they don’t admit anything until the third (planning on it), but it’s nice to type all of this down rather than keeping it in my head until it’s needed.  Looking forward to next month’s Beautiful People!

  1. Nice! These two sound like slow-movers, haha… I totally know how that is… 😛 Believe me, sometimes I want to punch my couples because they won’t get along with it fast enough. 😉 But, they sound very sweet once they are together! Third book?! How will I wait this long for a good romance?! AGH!!!!!

You never know, it might happen faster:) My characters never want to follow my writing outline. They prefer to go their own way and take the story in a completely different direction than I want.

  2. I can relate to characters not wanting to follow your outline ;)! It works out, but in the moment I often find myself in the odd predicament of shouting at my laptop, “What are you doing? NO, no, you were *supposed* to do ____!”

I really love the slow burn you’ve got going. Even if it works out differently, yay for no insta-love! 😀

I’m surprised with myself that I haven’t thrown anything at my computer . . . yet. And I totally agree! I prefer stories where the couples slowly (but not too slowly) fall in-love with each other over time as they get to know each other, like Pride and Prejudice.
